I’m not trying to start an argument here as I have no dog in the crypto hunt and never have. I’d like to know how Bitcoin is different than gold? Neither really have any intrinsic value. According to Business Development Manager Ian Dewar, Anacail’s in-pack ozone generating technology could revolutionise shelf-life and food safety for growers, suppliers, packers and retailers worldwide, thanks to its multiple benefits which ultimately would lead to retailers selling more produce, while cutting in-store waste.

“It’s a large production machine that runs at 100-120 packs per minute,” Dewar comments. “It slots into the end of the production line; you only need a couple of metres of space.” 

Innovative ozone technology developed and patented by Scottish company Anacail has the potential to be a game-changer for retailers in the UK and worldwide thanks to its ability to safely and quickly ‘decontaminate’ fresh fruits and vegetables in sealed packs. A potent germicide, the ozone actively reduces bacteria, mould, yeasts and viruses on produce without the need for any chemicals or additives, thereby extending shelf-life and improving food safety. PBUK caught up with Anacail, which is exhibiting at The London Produce Show and Conference, as it brings the product to market following years of research and development. 

“Our research team has introduced an intrinsically stable, ‘self-healing’ catalytic system based on earth abundant elements to promote the water electrolysis process in a strongly acidic environment and elevated temperatures,” he says. “The catalyst demonstrates the state-of-the-art activity, and most importantly, exhibits unparalleled stability under a wide range of aggressive, technologically relevant conditions of water splitting.”

“This technology increases shelf-life, so retailers are going to be able to keep products on the shelf for longer,” explains Dewar. “Also, because we’re killing spoilage organisms, like yeast, moulds, bacteria and even human pathogens, we can improve the quality of the product, plus the food will be safer to eat.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a class of biologically derived biopolymers with over 155 unique monomers [3]. The advantage of having many different monomers is that each possess different material characteristics and thus will be suitable for many potential applications [4]. One such PHA polymer is polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), a short chain length (scl) polymer, which has a melting point and tensile strength similar to polypropylene and a Young’s modulus comparable to polystyrene [5]. PHB is naturally produced in organisms such as Ralstonia eutropha, Alcaligenes latus, Burkholderia cepacia, and Bacillus sphaericus [6–9]. The three genes responsible for PHB production phbA, phbB, phbC, can be recombinantly expressed in laboratory strains of Escherichia coli [10].

As for the numbers, laser revenues for the scientific and military segment grew from $922 million in 2017 to $1.279 billion in 2018, with 2019 revenues forecast to grow modestly to $1.331 billion.

In 2018, refurbishment and new build work represented about 40% of our revenues and our record backlog showcases a large portion of the component work we have been awarded for future refurbishment content.
