Paid or not, a slew of them came to WOLF STREET’s comment section and cited intelligent-sounding gobbledygook “whitepapers,” made spurious arguments that were out of this world and defied gravity while claiming that the earth was flat or something. Plenty of them said nasty things. I blocked most of these comments because I didn’t want the comment section to become toxic. Some of them I let through to have a historical record about the nonsense spouted off by these promoters.

Wonder how our highest, taxpayer funded technology ends up in the hands of the Chinese who then beat us over the head with it??? Same back in the Clinton administration….anyone remember Loral Corp? Advanced missile guidance was the technology they got much the same way. Likely many similar in past 30 years. Just follow the money.

One thing about the technology, block chain, open ledger. It is the future. Can be used in so many ways, if say every expensive art picture gets cataloged, verified for authenticity and put on blockchain, you will always know it is an original. If all retail properties gets (after tile verification) put on a blockchain, there would be no scams and double selling… things like this. Stocks. After every trading day, there are missing shares. There are (officially) allowed scams by double counting, double assigning, naked shorting… If every share would be locked into blockchain, everything would be transparent and there would be no more scams from brokerages and alikes…

The first tell-tale sign to me that Bitcoin was nothing more than a cute theoretical idea that does not work in practice (if only because for the theory to hold in essence all participants must behave like robots that cannot collude and all have the virtually the same amount of computing power) was that virtually no professional cryptographer on the planet has ever taken it serious. I am one of them myself. It has long been clear to many of us that the enormous rise in prices has been fueled primarily by scammers doing automated trades with themselves at ever-increasing prices. Much like how the recent AI- generated work of art supposedly sold for almost half a million dollars – you can bet your a$& that this is not an arms-length transaction, and that effectively no such sum has changed ownership at all. What this fraud does is to bait greedy naive spculators. Bitcoin and clones have been using this fraud this in overdrive mode. What is extremely baffling is how come regulators have been, and still are, so incredibly slow to intervene. By not ding anything, they have sent out a signal to the ordinary man that apparently Bitcoin et al must be serious, legitimate stuff – in this way, our regulators are one of the key parties to blame for this mega scam. A lot of people who have massively enriched themselves by driving up the price through fraudulent techniques should be prosecuted, hand back their proceeds to a victim fund, and spend serious time in prison. Somehow I doubt, however, that this will happen…

The only theft that occurs in Bitcoin is when you trust your Bitcoin with a company instead of controlling the encrypted address yourself. This is not the fault of the technology but instead the fault of those who choose to trust others rather than themselves.
